Cancer Patient Transportation Program

Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society

Provides round trip door-to-door transportation to patients throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for cancer. Pre-screened volunteer drivers pick up patients from their homes, wait while the patient is at the appointment, and then return the patient home immediately afterwards. A caregiver may accompany the patient.

Crisis Response, Community Led - Comox Valley

AVI Health & Community Services Society

Provides emergency response to crisis calls related to mental health situations or crisis concerns. Crisis responders may include a mental health professional and a peer worker with lived experience working together to provide in-person support to youth and adults in the Comox Valley and surrounding areas.

A team of crisis responders are trained to help reduce distress, provide safety and support, help with referrals to other services and offer post-crisis follow-up.

United Way British Columbia

Provides a list of shelter beds and services to help people affected by homelessness find shelter and other essential services in the Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Greater Victoria area.

The shelter list is updated twice per day and is available online or by calling the 24-hour help line. Shelters include year-round shelters, temporary shelters and extreme winter shelters.

Offers a variety of client-centered services to individuals who are at risk due to substance misuse, with or without mental health issues, with a focus on the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless. The team works with clients where they are at physically - on the street, in shelters, or in their homes.

Services include housing support, substance use counselling and access to treatment, rent supplements, medical care assessment, life skills support and skill building, medication management, and referrals to community resources and income services.

Provides street outreach and harm reduction supplies to members of the community who use drugs and or who engage in sex work. The teams also provide information regarding overdose prevention and response, safe drug using, recent drug and sex work alerts, and referrals to other supports in the community such as housing and substance use treatment.

Through regular phone contacts, volunteers offer caregivers an opportunity to share experiences and feelings around providing care to their loved one.
